OFAC check
OFAC Check for a Whole List of Names
An OFAC check compares names with the sanctions lists of the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), part of the US Department of the Treasury. The main list is the Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List, the SDN List.
OFAC's own Sanctions List Search is free. OFAC says it is intended for individual users who look for potential matches, and that it should not be used by automated systems that run searches all the time (OFAC FAQ 287). Here you upload your whole list as a CSV or Excel (.xlsx) file and get one report, with every name checked against the SDN List and 9 more official lists.
Pay once per batch, from €19. No subscription, no monthly fee.
What OFAC's 2019 framework says
OFAC FAQ 11 says that all US persons must comply with OFAC sanctions. This includes US citizens and permanent residents wherever they are, all individuals and entities in the United States, and US incorporated entities and their foreign branches.
In May 2019 OFAC published "A Framework for OFAC Compliance Commitments". In it, OFAC strongly encourages organisations subject to US jurisdiction, and foreign entities that do business in or with the United States, with US persons, or with US-origin goods or services, to use a risk-based approach to sanctions compliance.
The framework says that a programme should have at least five components: management commitment, risk assessment, internal controls, testing and auditing, and training. This tool does one task: it checks names against the lists. It does not assess your risk and it does not decide for you.
SDN List, non-SDN lists and the Consolidated Screening List
OFAC keeps the SDN List and several other sanctions lists with different prohibitions (OFAC FAQ 5). The other lists are called non-SDN lists, for example the Sectoral Sanctions Identifications List and the Non-SDN Menu-Based Sanctions List.
The US Consolidated Screening List (CSL) combines the export screening lists of the Departments of Commerce, State and the Treasury, and OFAC's lists are among them. This check screens the OFAC SDN List and the CSL, so OFAC's non-SDN lists are in the same run.
What a batch check adds
For a file of customers, suppliers or students, this tool:
- reads a CSV or Excel (.xlsx) file with up to 2,000 rows
- checks every name against 10 official lists in one run
- gives one report as PDF, CSV and JSON, with each possible match, its list and the date of the list data
- deletes your file and the report 24 hours after upload
Name matching uses deterministic fuzzy matching (Jaro-Winkler and token-set). The same input and the same list version give the same result, with no AI or LLM in the matching path. Matching normally runs on a server of Hetzner Online GmbH in Helsinki, Finland. If that server is not available or returns an error, or if we switch it off, matching runs in Cloudflare's network, which can be outside the EU. Stored data uses Cloudflare's Eastern Europe location hint (EEUR), a placement preference, not a legal restriction. Your customer data is not used to train any AI model.

OFAC check: questions
Is the OFAC check free?
You can check up to 10 names in any 24 hours for free with the free check. A batch check of a file costs $19 (€19, £16) for up to 100 rows, $49 (€49, £42) for up to 500 rows and $99 (€99, £85) for up to 2,000 rows, paid once.
Which OFAC lists do you check?
The SDN List, and OFAC's non-SDN lists through the US Consolidated Screening List, which includes them.
How current is the list data?
We load the lists every day. The report shows the date of the list data it used for each list.
Does a match mean that the person is sanctioned?
Not on its own. A match means that a name in your file is similar to a name on a list. Review each possible match with the other data you have, such as the date of birth and the country. The tool does not decide for you.
Can I keep a record of the check?
Yes. Download the PDF report: it shows the possible matches, the lists and the date of each list. Your file and the report are deleted 24 hours after upload, so download the PDF to keep it.
SanctionListCheck is a due diligence aid designed to provide screening data against official sanctions lists. It does not offer legal advice, certify compliance, or approve counterparties. All screening results, particularly potential matches, necessitate thorough human review and evaluation by the user. The ultimate responsibility for compliance decisions rests entirely with your organization.
